# Setting Up Your First Matter Device

> Matter's best trick shows up the first time you pair a plug from one brand to a hub from another and your phone joins them without a single account handoff. That first pairing rewards a little care, because a clean start saves you hours later.

Before you unbox anything, line up three things: a controller (the app you'll organize everything in), a hub or border router that's already online (many people have one hiding inside a speaker or streaming box), and a stable 2.4GHz network. Matter is picky about that last one, so keep the phone doing the setup on the same network as the hub.

Now, the flow itself. Power the device on and wait for it to blink its ready-to-pair pattern. Open your controller, choose *Add device*, and scan the Matter QR code printed on the unit or in the manual. That code carries a one-time setup passcode, so you're not typing long strings by hand. The controller finds the device, provisions it onto your network, and then offers to share it with any other Matter app you use, which is the part that still feels a bit like magic.

If it stalls, nine times out of ten it's one of two things: the phone hopped to 5GHz, or the device was left half-paired from an earlier attempt. Factory-reset it and retry on 2.4GHz.

That's the whole thing: one code, one device, no brand lock-in.
