# Reliability Lives in the Hub, Not the Bulbs

Everyone shops for devices. Almost nobody shops for reliability. But reliability is a property of the hub and the network underneath, not the bulbs on top, so if your automations only fire "usually," that "usually" starts here.

Begin with the hub. The biggest single upgrade most setups can make is to put the coordinating hub on Ethernet and get it off the crowded shelf by the microwave. Wireless hubs drift. A wired one just sits there and works.

The mesh matters as much as the hub does. Thread and Zigbee lean on mains-powered devices to relay signal, so a few smart plugs in the right places give the network a spine. A house running everything off batteries doesn't really have a network; it has a rumor. Put a powered device every room or two, and build that backbone before you need it rather than after something drops.

Then stop running three apps. Every brand nags you to open its own, but you want one controller as the primary automation brain and the rest set read-only. Split-brain setups are where "why did the light do that?" lives.

Plan for the internet being down, because eventually it will be. The hubs that get this right keep running their automations locally when the cloud is unreachable, and there's a simple way to check yours: pull the router's WAN cable and see what still fires. Whatever dies was never really yours.

Update deliberately. Firmware fixes real bugs, so leaving everything frozen is its own mistake, but roll updates out one class of device at a time so a regression has only one possible cause.

None of this is exciting, which is the appeal. A boring hub is one you stop thinking about.
