Getting Started with Matter: Setting Up Your First Device
Matter promises one setup flow for every smart-home brand. Here's what actually happens the first time you scan the code — and how to get a clean pairing on the first try.
The best thing about Matter isn't a feature you can point to — it's the moment a plug from one brand, a hub from another, and your phone all agree to talk without a single account handoff. That first pairing is worth doing carefully, because a clean start saves you hours later.
Before you unbox anything, sort out three things: a controller (the app you'll organize everything in), a hub or border router already online (many people already have one hiding inside a speaker or streaming box), and a stable 2.4GHz network. Matter devices are picky about that last one — keep the phone doing the setup on the same network as the hub.
Now the actual flow. Power the device on and wait for it to blink its "ready to pair" pattern. Open your controller, choose Add device, and scan the Matter QR code printed on the unit or its manual. The code carries a one-time setup passcode, so there's no typing long strings. Your controller finds the device, provisions it onto your network, and — this is the part that still feels like magic — offers to share it with any other Matter app you use.
If it stalls, 90% of the time it's one of two things: the phone jumped to 5GHz, or the device was already half-paired from a previous attempt. Factory-reset and retry on 2.4GHz.
That's the whole ceremony. One code, one device, no brand lock-in.
